Job Description

Position Summary

The Accounting Technician supports key accounting functions including basic accounting tasks, preparing grant billings and invoices, organizing backup materials, assisting with audits, and coordinating with program staff for timely reports. Additionally, the position requires reviewing grant transactions for accuracy and supporting the accounting team with various tasks as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the Agency is founded to the staff, youth and the community we serve
  • Understand and comply with all Agency policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high level of ethical standards
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly grant billings with direction from the Senior Director of Finance.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries for grant revenue and adjustments.
  • Collect, scan, organize and store all back-up material related to grants.
  • Assist in preparation for audits and grantor reviews.
  • Coordinate with program staff to ensure program reports are received timely.
  • Review work and address any discrepancies or errors before final review.
  • Perform basic review of grant transactions to identify unallowable or miscategorized costs.
  • Assist in maintaining internal tracking spreadsheets and reports.
  • Support the accounting team with other basic accounting tasks as needed.
Qualifications

Education

Associate Degree in Business Administration or related field of study with emphasis in accounting, or similar preferred. Experience can substitute for post-secondary experience on a year-for-year basis.


Experience

1-3 years of bookkeeping, accounting, or general office experience preferred. Experience with State of Alaska and Federal grant reporting preferred. A basic knowledge of accounting is considered beneficial. Lived experience of homelessness considered an asset

  • Excellent oral and written, communication skills including organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed
  • Possess a current state of Alaska Driving License
  • Acceptable driving record assessed through CHA's Drivers Acceptability Matrix
  • Pass federal, state and local background investigation
Working Conditions
  • Position is established in an office setting within the Youth Engagement Center.
  • Noise level is mild to moderate, consistent with office and residential environments.
  • Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must have the ability to observe details within close range.
  • Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to move within the office to access files and office equipment.
  • Consistently operates a computer and related office machinery.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stairways in case of emergency to exit building safely.
