Job Description

A dynamic opportunity is available for a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to support communication needs in an elementary school setting. This contract position, based in Dumfries, VA, will span the current school year (CSY), providing critical interpreting services for students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Facilitate accurate and effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students, their peers, teachers, and school personnel using sign language.
• Interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa during classroom instruction, meetings, and school events.
• Collaborate with educators, counselors, and support staff to promote an inclusive learning environment.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards related to interpreting.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) with strong interpreting skills.
• Experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational context preferred.
• Familiarity with cultural nuances within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
• Ability to adapt interpreting style to various settings and individual student needs.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Relevant certification or training in sign language interpretation is highly desirable.
