This position supports the California Department of Public Healths (CDPH) mission by playing a critical role in surveillance and response efforts for influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other infectious diseases. The role aims to advance science, support public health practices, and inform policymaking.
The COVID-19 Control Branch (CCB), founded in 2023, provides scientific leadership and strategic surveillance of respiratory viruses to inform public health decisions. It utilizes genomic epidemiology, wastewater surveillance, and traditional disease surveillance methods to monitor respiratory virus activity in California and is prepared to support emerging respiratory disease outbreaks.

As the section chief for CCBs Medical Epidemiology section, this position supervises a multidisciplinary team to enhance respiratory virus surveillance and response systems, leads data-driven public health initiatives, and supports outbreak response activities, including ICS roles. The role involves providing expert epidemiological consultation, liaising with medical institutions, and participating in training and research activities.
