About Special Olympics Louisiana: Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Position Summary: Special Olympics Louisiana is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and passionate individual to serve as our Sports and Competition Director . This role is responsible for the overall strategic direction, development, management, and expansion of all sports programs and competitions across the state of Louisiana. The Sports and Competition Director will ensure that all programs align with Special Olympics International (SOI) standards, promote athlete development, and foster an inclusive and enriching sports experience for all participants.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Program Development

  • Implement the strategic plan for all Special Olympics Louisiana sports programs, aligning with the overall mission and vision of SOLA.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive coach education and certification programs, ensuring high-quality instruction and athlete development.
  • Ensure the consistent application of Special Olympics sports rules, regulations, and safety protocols across all levels of competition and training.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Programs and other leadership to integrate sports programs with other SOLA initiatives, such as inclusive health, Unified Champion Schools, and Athlete Leadership.
  • Stay informed of best practices in adapted sports and intellectual disability inclusion, implementing innovative approaches to enhance SOLA's offerings.

Competition Management & Operations

  • Direct the planning, organization, and execution of all state-level competitions (e.g., Summer Games, Fall Sports Classic, etc) and support regional-level qualifier events.
  • Recruit, train, and oversee Games Management Teams for each state-level competition, ensuring effective leadership and execution.
  • Oversee all logistical aspects of competitions, including venue selection, equipment procurement, volunteer recruitment and management, medical services, awards, and scheduling.
  • Oversee the athlete registration and data management systems (e.g., GMS), ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Develop and manage competition budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and efficient resource allocation.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with sports officials, community partners, schools, and other organizations to secure resources and support for competitions.
  • Ensure all competitions provide a positive, fair, and safe environment for athletes, coaches, volunteers, and spectators.

Coach & Volunteer Management

  • Supervise and mentor the Coach Education and Competition Logistics Manager and other sports program staff/volunteers.
  • Develop and implement strategies for recruiting, retaining, and recognizing coaches and sport-specific volunteers (e.g., sport technical delegates, officials).
  • Foster a strong, supportive, and knowledgeable community of coaches committed to the Special Olympics philosophy.

Administration & Compliance

  • Manage and maintain accurate records of athlete participation, coach certifications, and competition results.
  • Ensure all sports programs and events adhere to Special Olympics International (SOI) policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.
  • Prepare and present reports on sports program performance, participation metrics, and strategic initiatives to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with the Development team on grant proposals and fundraising initiatives related to sports programs.
  • Manage inventory of sports equipment and ensure proper maintenance and distribution.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, Recreation Management, Non-Profit Management, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in sports program management, event planning, or adapted sports, with some experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience with Special Olympics programs, either as a staff member, coach, or high-level volunteer, is highly preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans for sports programs and large-scale events.
  • Strong understanding of coaching methodologies, athlete development, and adapted sports principles.
  • Exceptional organizational, project management, and logistical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders including athletes, families, coaches, volunteers, donors, and community leaders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with sports management software/databases.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and travel extensively throughout Louisiana for events and meetings.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
